One of the most contentious issues in the health reform debate is the cost of reform to the American people. Those who oppose health reform have worked hard to scare people into believing that they will be forced to pay more to get less.

Many people do not realize that those of us who have health insurance pay a hidden health tax, an undisclosed insurance premium surcharge, to cover the medical expenses of those without insurance.

According to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, this year U.S. families will pay on average $1, 017 and individuals will pay $368 in hidden health care taxes, and this number is on the rise (estimates for Texas are even higher).Visit Speaker Pelosi’s website to see a running total of the Hidden Health Care Tax on insured Americans. This data is based on a recent analysis by Milliman, Inc., an independent actuarial consulting firm, commissioned by Families USA.
